Description

"How to be less wrong, lessons from founding a startup"
Presented by Austin Senseman and Nathan McMinn of Conserv

In many areas of our lives problems are well understood - what's the best way to hard boil an egg or how to build an API. In these situations, it's pretty obvious how to proceed (thank you Google!). In other areas of our lives the problems themselves aren't very well defined, and founding a startup falls into this second bucket. Not only are the problems difficult to solve but it's often not clear what the problems are. In navigating uncertain situations in an early stage business (or any area of your life) the goal of "being right" generally gives way to the goal of "being less wrong." Nathan and Austin want to share some of their hard-earned lessons on this topic. the lesson is that you have a choice to make - admit that you don't really know anything, or suffer the consequences.

Austin Senseman and Nathan McMinn are the founders of Conserv, a Birmingham-based startup building a collections-focused environmental monitoring platform. This business started with a goal of finding a non-optional problem in a large niche that could be solved with sensors and analytics. After many months of systematic discovery and testing, the founders uncovered a pressing need faced by the world's 450,000+ collections in museums, libraries, and archives. Moving from a general direction to a very sharp focus, Conserv now has paying customers, investors, employees, and is on the way to building a valuable business.
