About The Job:

The Informatics Institute within the UAB School of Medicine, established in 2015, comprises core and affiliated faculty and staff with expertise across the biomedical informatics spectrum. Informatics is a discipline that brings data together to synthesize new knowledge. Informatics is invaluable in the development of personalized medicine, improve the delivery of health care and help us understand health challenges facing the state and the nation. Informatics Institute faculty conduct research at the intersection of computer science, data science, biostatistics, applied mathematics, human biology, bioengineering, and medicine. We work to develop new approaches, techniques, tools and models that aim at solving problems relevant to human health and disease, including biomedical discoveries, assisted diagnosis, development of treatments and nov el therapeutics.


UAB is a leader in biomedical and health research, with Research funding from the National Institutes of Health in excess of $325 million in 2020. UAB ranks 27th in NIH funding nationally, and 12th among public universities.


What You will Be Part Of:

The Informatics Institute, in partnership with the Precision Medicine Institute, the UAB Center for Clinical and Translation Science, and the UAB Health System, is building and advancing an Enterprise Platform for effective use of clinical and biological data in research. The overall strategic environment includes, new and existing HIPAA-compliant, high-performance informatics tools to provide researchers with a means to better manage and analyze clinical and genomic data sets and implements a “translational research commons” to facilitate and enable interdisciplinary team science across geographical locations. This platform includes broad integration of data and infrastructure, including Enterprise Clinical and Research Data Warehouses, High Performance Computing and Research Computing infrastructures, as well as tools specifically to research data delivery and analysis platforms. This provides the foundation for successful biomedical research and advancements across research domains.


As part of this, we build tools to allow individual investigators to access data directly as well as to support our staff who provide custom datasets to the research community.

We also participate in large national projects, providing integration of electronic health record data, and tools supporting such collaborations.


What you'll be responsible for:

The role is a Senior Technical Software Developer in the software development team. The position is important to maintain technical capabilities for custom software development.  This position needs a strong technical leader who can pay an important role in the day-to-day activities of our software development projects as well as help determine a software development platform for our future projects.

To participate in the planning, design, development and support of software development projects using broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in informatics and software development. To serve a primary technical development role and complete complex assignments by developing new techniques and procedures. To evaluate, recommend and establish technical solutions and provide expertise relevant to decisions impacting the institution's software development processes and research goals.


The Informatics Architect will be primarily responsible for full-stack software development contribution for custom software development projects, and product delivery, as well as the collaboration and integration with our Enterprise Data Warehouse research team. This role will contribute to the Dev/Ops and SDLC development practices, as well as scaling the enterprise software capabilities of the team. The team is engaged in a number of large and small development efforts, including both end user focused web applications, as well as API development and system integration. Primary development activities within the strategic roadmap, and the focus on scalable platform development into the future is a key point of focus for the Developer role.


Your contribution, preferred, and required characteristics:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or a related field and eight (8) years of related experience.

  • Strong experience in React, PrimeReact or similar JavaScript Web application development.
  • Strong experience with User Interface design.
  • Full-Stack software development experience.
  • Experience in Java, JavaScript, and Linux, for enterprise web application development.
  • Preferred experience with Java/J2EE development, REST APIs, JSON, Python, Azure Authentication, and database knowledge.
  • Strong experience and enthusiasm for the full development life cycle, process focus and development task management.
  • Designing, developing, and supporting software solutions for biomedical research and clinical research informatics.
  • Experience working in large enterprise platform development and long term progression of strategic projects that comprise a holistic scalable e infrastructure.
  • Broad Software Development experience, and team collaboration.
  • Team development and growth, with a particular interest in team growth, and implementation of robust best practices.


Salary range:  $89,880 - $116,845 - $146,055
